- THE WIRE -
To
celebrate their tenth anniversary, French power trio Etage 34 release
a collection of newish material and archival highlights. Pretty much an
unknown quantity in the UK and US, their sound is a combustible mix of
murky, simmering riffs and freestyle eruptions. Taking the apocalyptic
crescendos of The Stooges "LA Blues" and adding plenty of textural
grit, taut rhythms and unpredictable volatility, they come up with sustained
displays of inventive raw power. The older tracks, such as the squealing
guitar overload of "Lost exit" and the epic fury of "Suit"
contrast with the relatively streamlined approach shown on the driving
groove of the more recently recorded "Nothin' knows" and a grimy,
lumbering demolition of Neil Young's "Old Man". Also included
are a couple of collaborations with guest vocalist; "Eaux Fortes"
features the incredible freeform yodel of Beñat Achiary; and the
vicious stutter of the kinetic "Ensités" is augmented
by the powerfull squall generated by Japanese vocalist Tenko. (Tom Ridge) |
